If you're like most of us in this country, you owe thousands of dollars to creditors. This debt isn't going away... in fact, with finance charges and interest payments, you are only digging a deeper hole! What you need, is a plan to eliminate your debt once and for all. That's where I come in.
Are you tired of paying huge interest charges and late penalties on debt? Quit listening to friends and family and start getting out of debt. Let's review some of the most common myths about debt - most of which are being spread by your friends and family - and they simply aren't true!
MYTH: "No Good Can Come From Debt..."
THE TRUTH: At this point you're probably to swear off debt at all costs. The truth is, debt can be used responsibly, and should be used in smart situations. The difference between the rich and the poor is the ability to use debt responsibly, and in situations that benefit them.
MYTH: "Debt Is Something Used By The Rich To Make More Money..."
THE TRUTH: It's not as common as one would think, and it's not true for the most part. Forbes magazine took a survey in 2006 and 75% percent of the Forbes 400 (the super-rich, not your broke father-in-law) all agree that the best way to build wealth is to get, and stay debt free.
MYTH: "Credit Got Me Into A Bad Financial Situation..."
THE TRUTH: Credit didn't get you into a bad financial situation, bad spending habits did. In fact, taking on debt can sometimes be wonderful for your financial situation in the long run. These are referred to as "good debts" and include things like purchasing a house, or taking on student loans to further your education.
MYTH: "You Should Contact This Program and You Can Get Out Of Debt Quickly..."
THE TRUTH: This is another great tidbit of advice that you get by listening to others (usually other who are still in debt). The truth is, whether it's a program, or you do it yourself, there is no "fast" way to get out of debt. The goal here is to discover the habits that got you into debt in the first place, and to correct them. Besides, any "discounts" you get from your creditors for being a part of a credit counseling service MUST be given to you as an individual, by law.
MYTH: "It's Too Late, My Credit Is Ruined..."
THE TRUTH: Although it takes time, and smart decisions, your credit isn't ruined. Credit scores are easily reversible given enough time, and the proper methods.
MYTH: "Credit Companies Don't Delete Information..."
THE TRUTH: That's not true at all. The FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) states that all creditors must delete any and all information deemed to be innacurate after a private investigation. Not only can they delete information, they have to!
MYTH: "If I Pay Off This Negative On My Credit Report, My Score Will Go Up..."
THE TRUTH: Not necessarily. In fact, paying items on your credit report might do more harm than good. Each time you make a change to your credit report, it can be re-reported which starts over the seven year window that it can be on there in the first place. I'm not suggesting you not pay back old debts, I just want to show you how to do it without it hurting your scores.
MYTH: "Credit Counseling, Debt Relief Programs are All Mostly Alike..."
THE TRUTH: Credit counseling is generally a not-for-profit company that shows you how to make smarter spending decisions, and to alleviate the sting of your existing debt. Debt management programs (commonly referred to as DMP's) collect a monthly sum from you, and dispense it to your creditors at that point.
MYTH: "Credit Counseling Services Are Not-For-Profit, So They Don't Charge For Their Services..."
THE TRUTH: This couldn't be more false. In years past, credit counseling was largely free from most of the non-profits, but this isn't the case anymore. These used to be funded by the creditors with a kick back as high as 15% for any payment they were able to get you to make. Now, these payments are as low as 6% which is a huge loss in funding, meaning they make up the difference by charging you. Non-profits have most of the same expenses as a traditional business, so they have to make up the cash somehow.
MYTH: "Just File Bankruptcy, It's Not That Big Of An Issue..."
THE TRUTH: Bankruptcy is an absolute "worst case scenario" way to relieve debt. Unless your debt is more than double that of your current income (not including a mortgage) you shouldn't even consider it. Most bankruptcy filings take as many as ten years to get removed from your credit report. Some may appear for even longer, depending on the circumstances of the filing.
